Building a Future Together |
In the
early 1700’s groups of settlers came to the Wallkill
River Valley and began farming the river’s fertile
shores. Two villages grew up along the muddy
Wallkill’s banks and, although they are different in
many ways, they complement each other. Montgomery,
constantly nourished by spring flooding, became a
farming community. Meanwhile Walden developed into a
manufacturing community, using the power of the High
Falls to operate the woolen mills which were
supplied by the sheep of the local farms. Linked
geographically by the river, these two villages are
incorporated as separate political entities even
though they and the unincorporated surrounding area
are part of the Town of Montgomery.
This year is an election year for Town and County
officers, and there will be a lot of talk about our
future. However, it is important that we maintain an
understanding of our past, how it unites both those
of us whose families established this town and more
recent arrivals, like me, whose choice to live here
will prepare Montgomery and the families of the 9th
District to face the challenges of the 21st century.
Many of us have an ideal concept of small town life.
We like the idea of the security and mutual aid
represented by a community that is self-sufficient
and works to improve itself. We are nurtured by a
sense of place that maintains an accessible human
scale. Some people think that this picture of small
town life is a thing of the past; that it has been
overwhelmed by the chaos of today’s hectic
lifestyle.
My idea of small town life is that it’s a lot like
being part of a large, extended family. There will
be conflict, but it is always possible to resolve
differences. We all live here, and every day we are
building a community which must serve us today and
in the future. Many generations have passed over the
narrow streets of our villages, and our winding
rural farm roads and, with careful planning, many
more will follow. We all have ideas about how this
will happen. No one concept says it all; everyone’s
ideas have equal value. Cooperation and respect
based on the principles of liberty and equality are
what it will take to succeed. Together the residents
of the Town of Montgomery and District 9 can develop
and protect a local lifestyle that accommodates our
needs.
I am asking for your vote on November 3rd for Orange
County Legislator from the 9th District.
I hope that you agree with me that these aspects of
small town life—neighborliness and preservation of
community values, mutual aid and public safety, open
dialogue and effective communication policies, and
maintaining a livable community on a human scale—are
worth protecting and perpetuating. If you do agree,
our chance to work together to achieve the
preservation of District 9 and the Town of
Montgomery begins now. As your Legislator I will
work with you to develop and promote ideas and
programs that will benefit all the residents of the
Town of Montgomery and the 9th District. This
election is your opportunity to define our future.
Your input is important. Together we will create a
vision for the future with a home town focus.
